Cycling Patterns and Potential in the GTHA

This research explores current cycling behaviour and opportunities for cycling growth in the GTHA. The main goal of this study is to quantify the potential for cycling in this region and identify areas with high versus low cycling potential using a small-scale geographical analysis. In addition, the research examines social and environmental enablers and barriers to cycling, and using this analysis as a tool, identifies areas within the GTHA that are amenable to cycling. This study will provide much needed context-specific insights into the regional patterns of current cycling behaviour and its potential for growth. The geo-demographic analysis will enable Metrolinx to target specific population groups or geographic entities for future interventions, and consequently, develop targeted and context-specific programs to improve cycling rates across the region.
