Unlike other countries where e-micromobility is typically an urban phenomenon, many suburban municipalities in Canada have been early adopters. In these communities with limited public transit, e-micromobility can offer more transportation choice, including a vital first/last mile link to and from transit stops/stations.
This research and partnership program unites 6 scholars from 4 provinces, 4 municipalities currently implementing e-micromobility programs, 3 regional transit agencies, and 2 industry partners.
Our goal is to generate new data and insights to help our partners and other Canadian suburban municipalities assess the challenges and opportunities of shared e-micromobility as a public transit solution, while addressing barriers to equitable access.
Our research objectives are to Explore shared e-micromobility use patterns and barriers in a suburban context; to Examine its potential as a public transit option and a first/last mile solution; and to Assess the benefits of low-fare shared e-micromobility service in overcoming cost barriers.
Our project will improve current knowledge of shared e-micromobility-related travel behaviour, specifically in a suburban context. Our study will benefit Canadian policymakers and private sector service providers by helping them identify how shared e-scooters and e-bikes can be incorporated as a public transit solution in suburban communities.
