Changes in emerging mobility tool adoption: A path towards sustainability?

Problem

This publication examines the adoption and impact of emerging transportation related technologies such as ride-sharing and remote work in southern Ontario from 2016 to 2021. Despite improvements, especially during a pandemic, it is unclear if they actually reduce private vehicle use or promote sustainable transportation.

Research Framework

The study examines the adoption of emerging mobility-related technologies in the GTHA between 2016 and 2021. It analyzes trends across urban and suburban areas, identifies demographic shifts in usage, and evaluates their potential to reduce car dependence and promote sustainability.

Conclusion/Implications

The study highlights the widespread adoption of car-sharing, ride-hailing, bike-sharing, and mobile services in the GTHA, especially during the pandemic. However, the impact of these technologies on reducing private car use and promoting sustainability remains uncertain. Demographic analysis reveals differences in adoption rates across groups, suggesting the need for targeted programs. The integration of these technologies into urban transportation infrastructure can enhance sustainable development, based on effective planning and ongoing research.
