This paper examines the impact of increased teleworking due to the COVID-19 pandemic on urban commuting and the geography of work. It examines how governments adopt policies to address the dynamic growth of telecommuting, weighing benefits such as energy savings against urban planning, budget pressures, and economic planning concerns. Focusing on the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) region of southern Ontario, this study examines how teleworking shapes travel planning strategies, focusing on shifts in work geographies and their potential urban impact by economic and travel practices.
The study collects survey data from 2580 people in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region in southern Ontario in the fall of 2021. Researchers use mathematical modeling to assess how participants work remotely and organize remote work practices depending on where they live and work. The study explores how telework affects commuting and urban development, especially after changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study suggests that remote work driven by the COVID-19 pandemic shows significant potential to change commuting and urban development patterns in southern Ontario's Greater Golden Horseshoe region over the long term. Telecommuting compresses and blurs the distances and distinctions between work and home environments, which affects people’s commutes. This highlights the need for adaptive urban design to address the growing impact of telecommuting on urban spaces and travel habits.
