Problem
This study explores whether people will actually use on-demand automated vehicles for transportation. It examines how current transportation habits influence the use of automated carpooling and collective automation. In addition, it identifies factors that influence people's intentions to adopt this new mode of transportation.
Research Framework
Data is collected through an online survey of 3,622 Canadians, where a structural equation model estimates the links between factors such as attitudes, social norms, and interest in driving AVs. This study also explores early AV adopters’ interests, comparing to see if the preference is due to AV technology or shared transportation.
Conclusion/Implications
The adoption of on-demand AV depends principally on individuals’ encouraging attitudes and habits and current users who want to ride. Efforts should emphasize both the benefits of AV technology and the benefits of shared mobility. Understanding the characteristics of early adopters will help develop strategies for incorporating AVs into daily travel habits in a way that advances broader public interests.
